HOSOKAWA MICRON's experience in designing and engineering complete powder processing solutions for the chemical industry is vast. Our chemicals division offers an unprecedented range of services and works with mixing, drying and agglomeration technologies for chemicals ranging from base chemicals in powder form, to fine-grade chemicals, dyes, pigments, plant protectors, fertilisers and abrasives. At Hosokawa Micron we have our own testing and process development center. Nauta Conical Mixer

The Nauta conical screw mixer is famous for its low-intensity mixing and is a pioneer in mixing technology. It's especially suited for delicate products and processes where very accurate results are required and is synonymous with gentle mixing of large volumes of up to 100,000 litres.

Flash Dryer Drymeister (DMR-H)

The Drymeister can handle moisture content fluctuations from a few % up to more than 80% in suspensions, slurries, pastes, filter cakes and wet powders. It requires 75% less space and uses about 30-40% less energy per kilogram of evaporated water.

Flexomix continuous agglomeration system

The Flexomix agglomeration system is controlled using a state-of-the-art integrated control system based on PLC and SCADA systems. It produces instant agglomerates with an open, raspberry-like structure, good solubility and good flow characteristics. The fluid bed dryer is specially designed for this system as a stationary unit without any moving parts, making it perfect for scaling up to almost any size.

HOSOKAWA technology tailored for 3D printing market
Manufacturing high-quality synthetic or metallic products and spare parts using a 3D printer requires pure and stable powders, which in turn places high demands on the processing equipment used to make them. The HOSOKAWA MICRON Group has the right powder processing technology to meet those demands.

Machines such as mixers, vacuum dryers, grinders and air classifiers are all examples of specially developed equipment for powder processing. The machines are used to remove impurities, sub-size particles and agglomerates and to optimize the quality of the material so that it is suitable for use in the 3D printing process.

High demands
HOSOKAWA has picked up on the growing interest in technologies related to the production of high-quality powders for additive manufacturing processes. The polymer and metal powders that are used in 3D printers must meet increasingly high demands in terms of not only narrow particle size distribution but also particle consistency with respect to things like shape, composition and flowability. HOSOKAWA is capitalizing on this trend by specially adapting its machines for these applications.

Virgin material
For the production of virgin material, the raw materials must be conditioned, crystallized and/or polymerized in such a way as to make them suitable for high-precision 3D printing processes. In addition to being perfectly spherical, the powder particles must also have the necessary shape retention and the right melting point. HOSOKAWA MICRON’s conical paddle mixer/dryer (CPM/CPD) is an ideal solution for conditioning powders.

Twenty years of research and development have culminated in the creation of the Conical Paddle Mixer/Conical Paddle Dryer (CPM/CPD) by HOSOKAWA MICRON B.V. The CPM/CPD can be used for mixing, drying and reaction processes. It is compact, quick, efficient and suitable for many applications in a diverse range of industries.
Extensive tests have demonstrated that the CPM/CPD is superior to other technologies currently available on the market in many mixing, drying and reaction processes.

“Development originally started with the intent to improve our existing Nauta vacuum dryer. We wanted a simpler, faster, more compact mixer and dryer,” says Dr. Peter van der Wel, R&D Manager. “This resulted in a design that is completely different from the Nauta conical screw mixer/dryer.”

Working principle
The central rotor creates a combination of vertical, axial and radial 3D motion in the vessel. The paddles gently guide the product along the vessel wall to the surface of the batch, where it is dispersed before being forced back down by the gravitational pull at the centre of the mixer. This creates continuous motion throughout the complete batch during the entire mixing cycle, even at low speed.

Ultimate versatility
The CPM/CPD combines extremely rapid drying rates with a compact design developed to enable vacuum, atmospheric and pressurized processing of a variety of materials such as powders, filter cakes, viscous slurries and especially brittle materials.
Capable of combining several processes in one vessel, the CPM/CPD has proved successful in a range of applications, including sterilization and pasteurization, high-temperature processing of powders, vacuum drying at low temperatures with liquid recovery, alkalization and crystallization.

The HOSOKAWA MICRON test centre in the Netherlands has units of 20, 150 and 3,000 litres for performing customer tests in practice.
